Simon Wood, Head of Food Development for Great Food at Leeds, has been at the University for 21 years and during that time has hosted many cooking demonstrations for different departments across campus.
In partnership with Leeds Global Community, the demonstrations are interactive, fun, a chance to socialise and give students an opportunity to taste home-made food. Although the sessions are open to all students, they are aimed to provide support and an engagement opportunity for our international cohort.
Simon’s passion for food, cooking and the industry is obvious during his demonstrations, and it’s evident this inspires the students. Simon said: “If I can inspire people who might not otherwise try to give cooking a go, then that’s great! There is so much job satisfaction to be had doing this job, I consider myself very lucky.”
Accompanied by Senior Chef de Partie Chris Johnson, Simon held a demonstration for new students in The Refectory in September. Following fantastic feedback from the session, Simon and Chris held another demonstration around the theme of Halloween and Bonfire Night during October where students bobbed for apples, decorated Halloween biscuits and learnt how to make pumpkin soup, pumpkin curry and pumpkin rice pudding!
