SimpleSandwichGreat Food at Leeds works hard to reduce wasted food throughout all of it’s outlets.

To ensure any food waste that is created is put to good use the Refectory has teamed up with Leeds University Union to give this food away in the local community. Each night any leftover food which is fully sealed and has a use by date for that day is given to the Nightbus driver who takes this on our behalf to St Georges Crypt. Here it is used to help feed the homeless and vulnerable before it’s expiry date.

Due to Food Safety Laws we’re unable to donate any food which is not completely sealed with a use by date on. As the majority of our food is made fresh on campus by our chefs each day this means that there is a limited number of products we’re legally allowed to donate, but whether it’s just one fruit pot or lots of sandwiches, we like to think that every little helps and it’s great to know that our waste food can help others instead of going in the bin.

We are continually working with our Sustainability team at the University to manage our food waste and we’re currently exploring many different options, including collecting sealed products with a use by date on for that day from our cafés around campus to also donate to St Georges Crypt.

If you have any comments or suggestions about how we can reduce our food waste then we’d love to hear from you, please email us.

incLucid poster 1Great Food at Leeds has a partnership with our suppliers which means for every bottle of Abbeywell water sold in our Cafés a percentage of the cost is given back to us at the end of the year to give to a charity of our choice. A proportion of this money has gone to a very worthy cause- the new incLucid alcohol free bar!

During Light Night on Friday 3rd October incLucid opened a pop up bar in Holy Trinity Church serving a range of delicious mocktails such as the Light Night Spritz; fragrant elderflower mixed with fresh blueberries, cranberry juice and soda (yum!). Great Food at Leeds, on behalf of the Facilities Directorate donated all of the supplies for the bar on the night to help raise awareness of this new initiative.

The bar was very successful selling hundreds of mocktails on the night and receiving lots of positive comments from feedback forms with over 60% of people saying an alcohol free bar is needed in Leeds and only 4% saying it wasn’t for them.

Take a look at the photos from the night on the incLucid facebook page.

incLucid are aiming to “create a dry bar in Leeds, free from alcohol which provides a safe and sociable environment for the increasing diverse customer base seeking new abstinent alternative venues. They believe that all people should be free to socialise in bars without the attraction of alcohol”.

We think this is a great idea and you can keep up to date with everything incLucid are doing by visiting the website or following them on Twitter.
